Wellcome Collection

The “Wuthering Heights” film releases on February 13th, and the press looks have been devastatingly romantic. Margot Robbie embodies a modernized Catherine Earnshaw through her gothic Victorian ensembles, filled with ornate jewels, drapey lace, and intense yearning. While reviews for the film are looking bleak due to major story adaptation errors and racial misrepresentation from the classic rendition, we are still soaking in the fashion create by Robbie’s stylist, Andrew Mukamal.

From the Medieval to Victorian eras, movie adaptations Wuthering Heights and Frankenstein, musical artists The Last Dinner Party and Florence and the Machine, and even Victorian-inspired couture looks from designer house Ashi Studios prove that whimsical and dramatic details are taking over. While it’s not clear whether these trends are stemming from a yearning for romance or the desire to add more mystery in our lives, these trends are here to stay.

Here is a list of our favorite recent looks that make us feel like we’re in a modernized classic novel.

Margot Robbie

This first look features Margot Robbie in a custom Scaparrelli gown with the $8 million Taj Mahal necklace, given to Elizabeth Taylor from her husband in 1972. The dress’s laced bodice, corseted back detail, and black-to-red ombre skirt breathes dramatic romance. The necklace’s Parsi inscription reads, “Love is Everlasting,” and stands as the focal point with its ornate details and rich history. As you can see in the pictures, Elizabeth Taylor tended to wear this necklace longer, but Margot Robbie tightened the back to shorten it, allowing the back chain to fall down her back. We love this idea of decorating the back of an outfit with a necklace, and it can be achieved with any long chain and a shortener clasp.

Mia Goth

Mia Goth’s costumes from the 2025 Frankenstein adaptation have us mesmerized. Director, Guillermo del Toro, decided to refocus the movie from the 1790s to the 1850s, to introduce a backdrop of the Industrial Revolution and the Crimean War. The bright colors and patterns, striking shapes, and bold accessories put a beautiful, modern twist on Victorian era fashion. This largely contributed to the intense visual design that surrounded the movie. We love Mia Goth’s blue jeweled choker, which can be easily recreated and add drama to any outfit.

Teyana Taylor

Ashi Studio just released their Spring Summer 2026 Couture collection at the Paris Couture Week, finding much of their inspiration from Victorian mourning jewelry. In the Victorian Era, jewelry pieces were made from hair, fossilized wood, and black, white, and red gemstones or metals to make lost loved ones feel close. At the Santa Barbara International Film Festival Virtuosos Award ceremony, Teyana Taylor wore a ghostly gothic liquid piece from this new collection. It features dramatic shoulders and haunting stretched sleeves with gauze detailing. This is not Taylor's first time wearing Ashi Studio as she wore a black mesh piece from their Spring 2025 Haute Couture collection for the premiere of her movie “The Rip" in January. The exaggerated hips were a prominent feature, which was a widely seen trend in the late 18th century. While certain design aspects might have taken inspiration from the Rococo and Regency eras, the draped mesh and the face mask create an alluring, modern finish.

We hope you find some inspiration from these looks and add some gothic Victorian elements into your life, whether that is found through style, sentimentalism, or the addition of a little more romance in your day-to-day life.
