Victorian gothic inspired fashion moments

Wellcome Collection

The “Wuthering Heights” film releases on February 13th, and the press looks have been devastatingly romantic. Margot Robbie embodies a modernized Catherine Earnshaw through her gothic Victorian ensembles, filled with ornate jewels, drapey lace, and intense yearning. While reviews for the film are looking bleak due to errors around story adaptation and racial misrepresentation that stray from the classic novel, we are still soaking up the fashion inspiration.

Across film, music, and fashion—from "Wuthering Heights" to Florence and the Machine to Ashi Studios couture—there is a growing demand for whimsical, dramatic detail. While the romance and mystery surrounding this gothic style is compelling, mirrored themes of social repression and industrial dread in modern life could influence the resurrection of this trend as fashion is often a tool of self expression and resistance.

Regardless of whether or not the meaning behind the gothic resurgence goes deeper than surface level, these are a few of our favorite recent fashion looks that make us feel like we’re in a modernized classic novel.

Margot Robbie

This first look features Margot Robbie in a custom Scaparrelli gown with the $8 million Taj Mahal necklace, given to Elizabeth Taylor from her husband in 1972. The dress’s laced bodice, corseted back detail, and black-to-red ombre skirt breathes dramatic romance. The necklace’s Parsi inscription reads, “Love is Everlasting,” and stands as the focal point with its ornate details and rich history. While Elizabeth Taylor wore this necklace long, Margot Robbie tightened it around her neck, allowing the remaining chain to fall down her back. Not only does this better represent Victorian-style jewelry, but it also complements the neckline of the dress. We love a necklace that decorates the back of an outfit too, and a long chain and a shortener clasp is all you need to achieve it.

Mia Goth

Mia Goth’s costumes from the 2025 Frankenstein adaptation have us mesmerized. Director Guillermo del Toro decided to refocus the movie from the 1790s to the 1850s, introducing a backdrop of the Industrial Revolution and the Crimean War. The bright colors and patterns, striking shapes, and bold accessories put a beautiful, modern twist on Victorian era fashion. This largely contributed to the intense visual design that surrounded the movie. We love Mia Goth’s blue jeweled choker, which can be easily recreated to add drama to any outfit.

Teyana Taylor

Ashi Studio recently released their Spring Summer 2026 Couture collection at the Paris Couture Week, incorporating major elements from Victorian mourning jewelry. In the Victorian Era, materials such as hair, fossilized wood, and black, white, and red gemstones or metals were incorporated into jewelry to make lost loved ones feel close. At the Santa Barbara International Film Festival Virtuosos Award ceremony, Teyana Taylor wore a ghostly gothic liquid piece from this new collection. It features dramatic shoulders and hauntingly stretched sleeves with gauze detailing. Taylor also wore Ashi Studio for her movie premiere of “The Rip" in 2025 with a black mesh dress from their Spring 2025 Haute Couture collection. The exaggerated hips were a prominent feature - a popular design element in the late 18th century. While certain aspects of the dress might have taken inspiration from the Rococo and Regency eras, the draped mesh and the face mask create an alluring, modern finish.

We hope these looks inspire you to bring a touch of Gothic Victorian romance into your everyday life-through fashion, sentiment, or small, meaningful details.
